Good work is important. But making your work visible is a career skill.
If you’re an introvert or someone who believes, “My work speaks for itself; I don’t need to highlight everything I do,” it may be time to rethink that approach.
Your manager may not see everything you accomplish.
Your peers may not know every contribution you make.
Your professional network may not know what you’re capable of.
This doesn’t mean you need to brag or constantly promote yourself.
It means you need to communicate your impact.
And the same applies to the idea:
“I don’t like sales. I want a career where I don’t have to sell.”
You may not work in sales, but throughout your career, you will need to communicate and demonstrate your value.
You sell your skills in an interview.
You sell your ideas in a meeting.
You sell your value during a salary discussion.
You sell your credibility when building relationships.
You sell your vision when getting people behind your work.
You don’t need to become a salesperson.
You need to learn how to communicate your value effectively.
Doing great work and getting recognized for that work are two different skills.
Do good work.
Make your impact visible.
Communicate your value.
Create more opportunities.
